On Tuesday I took the train from Osaka to go visit Naoshima, a small island in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan.
Since 2004 the small island (only 14km²) has become focused on art and museums to drive tourism to the area. A lot of temporary and permanent outdoors installations are also present throughout the island. After arriving by boat in the morning, I rented an e-bike to ride around Naoshima and try to hit most of the museums. In the end, the weather was so beautiful and I ended up doing more biking and less visiting... but still got to see 2 of the important museums of the island!
Unfortunately no photos allowed in museums, so I can only show the brochure they give at the entrance.
Lee Ufan Museum
Lee Ufan is a minimalist painter and sculptor. Frankly I wasn't too impressed by what was shown in that museum, but hey, it's nice to confirm that I'm still not interested in minimalist art!
Chichu Museum
My highlight from the Chichu museum was by far the light room from James Turrell. One day I should try to find some time to go to the Center for International Light Art in Germany...
In the end Naoshima ended up being my only side trip from Osaka, I ended up being too exhausted to do much. But now the real fun begins: Hiroshima, Fukuoka, then Yakushima!
