I didn't end up doing much on Wednesday and Thursday — met with a friend for dinner + random hacking discussions after arriving on Wednesday, then pretty much worked the full day on Thursday since it was rainy most of the day. But yesterday I finally had the opportunity to do more interesting things in the city. I worked in the morning and in the evening to give me some time to walk around in the afternoon in the now beautiful and sunny 24°C weather.
Since I didn't really have a plan and only had a few hours to kill, I went to one of the few areas of Tokyo that have been on my to-visit list for a while: Odaiba.
Odaiba used to be an old island fortress built to defend Tokyo against attacks by sea. In the late 1990s, the island was reconverted into a large tourist / entertainment district, with many hotels, malls, and a great view of the Tokyo skyline.
My highlight of the area is most likely the Unicorn Gundam statue, a 20m replica of a mecha from the Gundam series. Really impressive to see it towering over the crowd in person!
The rest of the island has many crazy buildings, art / statues, and weird futuristic views. Enjoy the pictures!
Oh, and of course, finished the day with some really good Tempura in a random restaurant in Shibuya:
Tomorrow should be a bit more exciting: I'm taking a train to the Hakone National Park, 1h away from the city, for a bit of light hiking and hopefully really nice views!
